Sadie Coles HQ opened in April 1997. The gallery focuses on presenting the work of established and emerging international artists. The gallery's inaugural exhibition of new paintings by American painter John Currin was mounted in parallel to a show by British artist Sarah Lucas, The Law, in St John Street. This established the international dimension of the gallery's programme. Sadie Coles HQ has operated from a variety of distinctive spaces since its inception, as well as mounting off-site projects in different locations.
Since 2007 the gallery has occupied two sites in Mayfair. In October 2010, a 5000 sq ft gallery opened in London's West End with a major exhibition by Urs Fischer. It closed in March 2013 and in September 2013, the largest site yet occupied by Sadie Coles HQ opened in London’s West End with an exhibition of new works by American painter Ryan Sullivan – the artist’s first exhibition with Sadie Coles HQ. Sadie Coles HQ has recently begun representing Michele Abeles, Uri Aran, Adriano Costa, Helen Marten and Jordan Wolfson.
