The company is inspired by Richelieu's grandmother Sofi, who sold handcrafted shea butter soaps and salves in Sierra Leone to support her family, after she was widowed at a young age. Sofi became known as a healer thoughout the countryside, and taught her recipes to her Richelieu. And after graduating from college, he incorporated four generations of recipes and wisdom into natural bath and body products, and with best friend, Nyema Tubman, began selling the creations along the sidewalks of Harlem. Richelieu, his mother, Mary and Nyema founded parent company Sundial Brands and the SheaMoisture and Nubian Heritage brands, and drew the attention of national retail chains. Now operating in two state-of-art manufacturing facilities, SheaMoisture is available at Target, Walgreens, CVS, Ulta, Rite Aid and Duane Reade; Nubian Heritage is available at Whole Foods, Vitamin Shoppe, Wegmans, Earth Fare, Sprouts, Pharmaca and independent health food stores throughout the country. Both brands have garnered awards from Allure, Natural Health, Family Circle, Prevention, Parents, Esquire, Essence, All You, Ebony and Real Beauty, among others. The company has pioneered a Community Commerce program. Since shea butter is central to its products, it’s ethically sourced from seven women’s co-ops in Northern Ghana, and invests in over 2500 women entrepreneurs. Sundial doesn’t just buy the women’s raw materials — it helps them develop self-sustaining businesses. An ethical wage premium is paid to these enterprising women, and they become Sundial’s partners, not just suppliers.
