Overview
Bank of Greece operates as the central bank of Greece. It participates in the formulation of the single monetary policy in the euro area, manages part of the European Central Bank's foreign exchange and gold reserves, oversees payment and settlement systems, promotes arrangements for the maintenance of financial stability, collects statistical data from monetary financial institutions, and issues euro banknotes, and circulates and handles euro banknotes and coins. The Company also supervises credit institutions and various enterprises in the financial sector, supervises and monitors insurance and reinsurance firms, as well as insurance intermediaries, and manages and operates the system for monitoring transactions in book-entry securities. In addition, it holds and manages the country's official reserve assets, such as the foreign exchange and gold reserves, acts as treasurer and fiscal agent for the government, compiles and publishes statistics on the Greek economy and conducts specialized statistical surveys, operates the Electronic Secondary Market for Securities system, and publishes reports and carries out policy-relevant research and analysis of the economic conjuncture and the monetary policy.
