Founded in 2004, UnitCargo was the brainchild of Davor Sertic an Austrian who had originally wanted to be a professional footballer but pressure from parents to “get a proper job” cast him into higher education. Through job rotation at his first employer he discovered the world of freight forwarding for which he soon developed a passion. Though he came to Austria at the age of 2 month, his language skills in the family language, Serbo-Croatian plus German, where he sent all this years as a school pupil made him an ideal candidate for managing truck transport between the carriers of South Eastern Europe and the Southern Germany. His skills really came to the fore during the conflict in the region when key shipments had to be re-routed to avoid expropriation by local warlords. They were, in his own words “difficult but interesting times”. History almost repeated itself with the Iraq conflict of 1990/1 when the challenge was to get medical suppliers to the conflict areas.
When in 1996 a colleague asked him to join a new company “Globe Cargo” he relished the challenge but the desire to run his own company was always present so in 2004 began UnitCargo. From a very small beginning, literally a desk in the basement, the business grew slowly but steadily utilising his past knowledge of the Balkans to Germany routes, which were soon expanded to connect to Scandinavia.
The business has grown rapidly in the past 5 years but still maintains a tight focus on the transport corridor which links Scandinavia via Central Europe with the Balkans and Beyond. Key to that success has been the team of employees which has brought significant language skills to the operation. Currently 17 languages are spoken in a team of 50 spread over Five offices.
Though recently elected as President of the Transport and Traffic Division of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce, Davor Sertic continues as the guiding hand in the business which he founded and looks forward to further growth in the years ahead. “With the end of the Iranian sanctions on the horizon our past experience in delivering to this region puts us in a prime position for further growth. I have every confidence that our team will continue to out perform our competitors and deliver a quality service to all our clients”.
