Hooker Furniture Corporation

In 1924, four-year-old Clyde Hooker, Jr. pulled the cord on the steam whistle that signaled the first work day at Hooker Furniture in Martinsville, Virginia. In his 40 years leading the company, Clyde's remarkable dedication to the pursuit of making stylish, beautiful, well-made furniture propelled Hooker to become one of the world's most respected furniture companies. Clyde became president of Hooker Furniture in 1960 at the age of 40, while his father, Clyde Hooker Sr. remained as chairman. Economic times were difficult. Frustrated by the company’s slow growth, young Clyde sought his father’s advice. “Son, get yourself a niche,” said Clyde Sr. “Be important for something.” That advice would set Hooker’s course over the next 50 years. Soon afterward, Hooker became known as a specialist in home entertainment wall units and armoires. A bit later, the company became famous for its extensive line of functional home office furniture and accent furniture pieces like consoles, credenzas and living room tables. From one generation to another, the driving force of the company has been what Clyde describes as “the heart of Hooker Furniture.” “Our company,” he said, “ has been built around honesty and integrity in the way we deal with our customers, our employees, our sales representatives, our suppliers and communities. It has been all about listening to others, listening to our customers and treating people fairly.” In 2000, Clyde passed the torch of leadership to Paul B. Toms, Jr., grandson of Clyde Hooker Sr., making Hooker one of the few furniture firms still led by a member of the founding family. From our beginnings in 1924, Clyde Sr. set a tone of doing business with a personal and caring touch while displaying integrity in our relationships. Two generations later, we've kept that "small town, small company style," even though we've grown to be one of America’s top publicly traded furniture companies. Our core values are: Integrity, Listening, Caring, Innovation, Service, Responsibility, Citizenship and Honesty
