Apothecary by Design

Apothecary By Design is a specialty pharmacy headquartered in Portland, Maine, with a regional pharmacy in the Chicago area, and licensed throughout nearly the entire United States. We’re focused on the treatment of complex, chronic diseases, such as infertility, hepatitis C, and rheumatoid arthritis. ABD was founded as a community pharmacy in 2008 by five partners, three of whom are still active in the business. With only a few employees back then, struggling in a difficult economy, everyone pitched in; partners doubled as shipping clerks, and every team member answered the pharmacy’s telephone. From the start, we saw ABD as a different type of pharmacy—one that worked as an integral part of the patient’s care team, and that actively advocated to achieve the best possible outcomes. So we did things a bit differently, cultivating our staff to form deep connections with patients and providers, to go the extra mile for the people we serve, and to set uncompromising quality standards. Over time, ABD has successfully realized this vision, as demonstrated by the growth of the business and its recognition in the field of pharmacy. Along the way, ABD has been fortunate to be assisted by community partners such as the City of Portland, Bangor Savings Bank, and the Finance Authority of Maine.
